How to Look and Feel Natural in Photos

(Even If You Don’t Like Having Them Taken)

If the thought of stepping in front of a camera makes you feel awkward, stiff, or just plain nervous, you’re not alone!

As a photographer, I’ve worked with loads of people who start a shoot saying, “I hate having my photo taken,” and by the end, they’re actually enjoying it!

Confidence isn’t something you’re born with, it’s something you can build. Whether you’re getting professional brand photos, headshots, or just snapping pictures for your socials, here’s how to ditch the nerves and feel like your best self in front of the lens!

Shift Your Mindset

Confidence starts in your head. If you go into a photoshoot thinking ‘I’m going to look awkward’ chances are, you’ll feel awkward. Instead, try flipping the script. Remind yourself:

  • You don’t need to be perfect – you just need to be you.

  • The camera isn’t your enemy – it’s just capturing your personality.

  • It isn’t about having perfect features – it’s about feeling good with confidence and comfort.

Try thinking of a photoshoot as a fun experience rather than something to endure. Instead of focusing on how you look, focus on how you feel, because when you feel good, it shows.

Have a Little Practice!

If being in front of the camera feels unnatural, practice in front of a mirror or take a few selfies. It might feel silly, but getting familiar with your angles and expressions can make a big difference in your confidence. You don’t need to “perfect” a pose, just get comfortable seeing yourself in a relaxed way.

Relax & Think of Something that Makes You Smile

A forced smile is easy to spot, so don’t feel like you have to plaster one on the whole time. Instead, take a deep breath, relax your shoulders, and smile like you would when chatting with a friend.

If you need help, a little laughter always works wonders, think of someone who always makes you smile or a funny memory that genuinely makes you laugh!

Bring Movement into Your Photoshoot

Try to avoid standing stiff  in front of the camera.

The trick? Movement! Walk, laugh, play, jump, dance, shift your body from side to side, anything to avoid feeling frozen.

These little movements help you ease up and make a photo more interesting by bringing fun elements into your photoshoot.

Using props like a cup, laptop, book, phone or even just a jacket to hold can give you something to do with your hands.

Wear What Makes You Feel Good

Confidence starts with feeling comfortable, so choose outfits that make you feel like you. Avoid anything too tight, too loose, or something you’re constantly adjusting.

✔️ Stick to colours that suit you and your style

✔️ Choose outfits that make you feel confident

✔️ Bring clothes that fit well, suit your style, and allow you to move naturally

When you feel good in what you’re wearing, it shows in your photos

Find a Photographer You are Comfortable with

A great photographer doesn’t just take pictures, they create an experience where you feel comfortable, natural, and confident.

Look for someone whose style you love and who takes the time to chat, guide you, and put you at ease.

Arrange a video call with them before making your decision, to get a feel of their personality.

If you’re nervous, let them know! A good photographer will know exactly how to help you feel relaxed, whether it’s through conversation, movement, or little prompts to take your mind off the camera.

Trust the Process

The best photos come from real, unfiltered moments, not from trying too hard to pose perfectly.

Trust your photographer, let go of the pressure, and allow yourself to enjoy the experience.

You might be surprised at just how good you look when you stop overthinking it and let go of the pressure to be perfect.

Focus on being relaxed, happy and just being yourself.

Your audience wants
to see you!

Remember looking natural in photos isn’t about perfection. The more you relax, move naturally and let your real personality shine through, the better your photos will be.

So next time you’re in front of the camera, take a deep breath, have a little fun, and remember confidence is just a mindset shift away.
